~ "The One of
the Mysteries"~
Safar al-Asrar (Book of Secrets)
Manichaean
Text by Mani
("His knife for cutting is the Book of the
Mysteries. - Mani Bema Psalm MP46)
The " Book of Secrets" mentioned by Titus
as Mysteries, and among Christians it was described as the book
which seeks to destroy the law and the prophets. It contained dialogues
between Yeshu and his disciples and info on reincarnation. It survived
until at least 1000 A.D.. Al-Nadim, in his Fihrist, tells us that the Safar
al-Asrar contained the following 18 sections: Biruni quotes Mani from this
book:
"Since the Apostles knew that souls are immortal
and that in their reincarnations they are ultimately cast in every form
which they can have as a garment and every creature in which they may be
shaped and similar to every form which is cast in their mold, they asked
the Messiah concerning the end of the souls which did not receive the truth
and did not know the Ground of Their Being. So he said: 'Any weak soul
which has not received her links with the Truth is destroyed and does not
have rest.'"
"The Bardesanites believed that the ascent
of the soul and its purification are in the corpse of flesh. They did not
know that the soul is the enemy of the material body and it prevents her
from ascending and that it is a prison and a painful punishment for her.
If this form of flesh were a reality, its creator would not have allowed
it to wear out or be harmed and would not have required it to procreate
by means of semen in the womb." (Biruni
quote from 12th Chapter:)
Biruni quotes Mani further, possibly from the
book of Secrets. Biruni writes "On this theory (matter as an agent for
God), Mani built the following sentence:
"The Apostles asked Jesus about the life of
inanimate nature, whereupon he said: "If that which is inanimate is separated
from the living element which is comingled with it, and appears alone by
itself, it is again inanimate and is not capable of living, whilst the
living matter which has left it, retaining its vital energy unimpaired,
never dies." (Biruni
quote in his India work, pg 23:)
