Denewar Manichaeans
The Denewar Branch Of Manichaeism

The Eastern Denavariya School of Manichaeism was founded by Shad Ohrmizd around 600 A.D. with roots back to Mar Ammo in the third century. More Buddhist influence than other Manichaean schools, and more caution concerning disturbance of the Cross of Light. This group is oft accused of anciently fabricating a letter supposedly from Mar Mani to Mar Ammo which particularly stresses meditation and other Buddhist teachings. Suspicion of its authenticity centers around its unusual use of the names of Mani and Ammo which seem somewhat out of place in a personal letter between the two. It says:

"And I, mar Mani, am this sinless one who is the writer, and you, Mar Ammo, are the addressee." Mani Letter, Sweet Teachings of the Sinless
This group of Manichaeans were quite distressed when a more relaxed group of Mihrites moved into their territory from farther west.  One Sogdian letter written between 763 and 840 records their consternation, while another says thus:
"...Gavryav . . .said: "It is altogether in accordance with the religious law." And, oh lord, [in order to prevent that] their own soul suffers such a dire fate [as a result of their laxity], it is necessary to add that . . .; they come up [here] and mix with us, and if they stay for several years, [they will]...It will be...according to...of the present superiors.  And this . . . unlawful and inappropriate order will be taught to the notice of the present superiors . . . Those who were their (the Syrians) spies will finally take the place of our superiors, . . . . and they will injure those direly beset, and will cause great trouble for (our) superiors, and they will wash [their hands] in [blood] . . .

At that time, . . . .oh lord, you yourself were [bishop]; the customs and the manner of these base, vile Syrians are like this: They are experienced and versed in schisms [and] quarrels, for the spirit of schism reigns supreme here. And . . . their word is very perditious. Therefore please observe closely [whether] those that came here first have brought about profit and gain (or not). For the (Syrian) Teacher Mahdad has slandered (our) teacher Mihran, strong in faith, just as Gavryan [has come to prevail over] (our) elect and (our) teacher Nvanzadag and the (Syrian) Teacher Saxtoe and the (Syrian) bishop Ktvn [have come to prevail over] . . . ; . . . the base Farraxan, who seeks destruction . . . "  Sogdian Letter from Turfan

Peace to all . . .
