The Cross of Light should always be respected
on all levels of its manifestation, but there are times when the more destructive
elements of nature must be restricted. This is in accord with Mani's
directive to act like a surgeon to remove the offending part for the benefit
of the whole:
"He is like this, a wise doctor who
might turn back ... ... his disease. As a wound is in his body, he
cuts ...this person who is ill, in his wisdom, .. ... he ... this wound,
and he cuts it. After these things ...and he places the soluble drugs upon
it, so that they will be able to dissolve. He might incise it with the
iron, and he casts it out from him, with the soluble drugs. And the wound
is purified from the fever." Kephalia
of the Teacher, Teachings of Mani, 85
The Order's position on restricting the more negative
influences of the five forms of life are as follows:
-
One Sense: Containment and control of all natural
elements to prevent damage from dust, flood, fire, storm and noxious plants.
This includes the ability to weed a garden to further its overall alms
producing qualities.
-
Termites: Irradication from wooden structures
of the Order considered permissible.
-
Lice: Removal and termination from human scalps.
-
Flies, stinging insects: Shush them from dwellings
when possible, termination of them when it is not possible to irradicate
them with more gentle measures.
-
Wild Animals and hostile Humans: The first act
should be removal from any area where intervention seems likely. When unforseen,
then self defense is permissible.
Unlike Jains, Nazoreans see each manifest life
form as but a part of one larger life force - the Living Soul.
Individual aspects of the Living Soul should be respected, but one does
not kill the Living Soul by destroying its individual manifestations. To
harm any aspect of Life should not be done without a very good reason that
benefits the overall Living Soul more than the destruction of its individual
parts harm it. Except for the occasional termination of noxious insects
and rodents when all other methods of irradication of them has failed,
there is seldom if ever any need to deliberately harm any higher life form.
Diet or clothing is never any excuse to kill animal, fish, reptile or bird.
Nor are conscientious Nazoreans allowed to benefit from their demise in
anyway whatsoever.
