Silk Road Maps Manichaean Sites around the Taklamakan Desert Turfan was the center of the Manichaean Uighur Kingdom. (see square below). Dunhuang, or Tun-huang to the southeast of Turfan is where some Manichaean texts were discovered in 1900. Kuchu, to the west of Turfan, was another important Manichaean site.
